It also looks friendlier from the other side, which neighbors and HOAs often appreciate.

Shadowbox (board-on-board)
Boards alternate on each side of the rails with a small offset. It looks finished from both sides and blocks most direct views while breathing between boards.
Lattice top
A solid lower section with a lattice band on top. You get privacy at eye level for someone sitting on the patio and an airy, decorative finish above.
Spaced boards
Vertical or horizontal boards with deliberate gaps. Wider gaps feel open and modern; tighter gaps give more screening.
Vinyl semi-privacy

Where Semi-Privacy Makes Sense
We often suggest semi-privacy designs for side yards between houses on tighter lots, such as those in Ardmore, Narberth and Wayne, where a solid wall can make a narrow space feel darker. They also work well around vegetable and flower gardens, along a property line you share with friendly neighbors, and behind a patio where you want a sense of enclosure without trapping heat.
A good layout can combine styles. Some homeowners put a full privacy fence behind the patio or hot tub and switch to a semi-privacy section along the side yard, keeping the same material and color for a unified look.
Material Choices
Cedar is the classic choice for shadowbox and lattice-top fences. It is easy to customize, takes stain well and ages gracefully. Pressure-treated pine is a more budget-friendly wood option. Details We Pay Attention To
- Gap sizing for pets. If you have a small dog, we’ll keep openings tight enough that nobody squeezes through. Our pet fence page has more on this.
- Wind load. Semi-privacy fences shed wind better than solid fences, but posts still need to be set properly, typically 30″–36″ deep in our area; local code governs.
- Both sides finished. Shadowbox looks good from either side, which can help with HOA approval and neighbor relations.
- Grade and roots. Clay soil, schist and mature tree roots are common here. We plan post locations around them and follow slopes cleanly.

Rules vary by municipality, HOA and historic district, and some communities care a great deal about which side faces out and how open a fence looks. We check the requirements for your address and handle the permit and any HOA approval for you. We also submit the PA One Call (811) request so utilities are marked before we dig.
