What Makes Farm Fencing Different

A backyard fence mostly has to stand up to wind and time. A farm fence also has to handle animals that rub, lean, chew and occasionally run into it, plus tractors, mowers and trailers moving through gates. Runs are longer, grades change more, and the ground often includes rock, wet spots and tree lines. That changes how we plan post spacing, corner bracing, gate widths and materials.

Planning a Long Run

Long fence lines reward planning. We walk the property with you to decide what really needs to be fenced, where gates should go for animals and equipment, and where the fence can follow natural features like tree lines and hedgerows. Often the best layout combines styles: an attractive ranch rail along the road and driveway, with more economical wire fencing out back where appearance matters less.

Corners, ends and gate posts carry the most load, especially with tensioned wire. We brace them so the line stays tight and the posts don’t lean over time.

Ground and Weather Challenges

• Rocky, clay-heavy soil. Much of the region has clay and schist. We plan for slower digging and adjust post locations when we hit rock.
• Frost heave. Posts are set typically 30″–36″ deep in our area to stay below the frost line; local code governs.
• Wet ground. Heavy spring rains and low spots can soften soil around posts. We look at drainage during the walkthrough.
• Snow and storms. Nor’easters bring snow loads and falling limbs, so we look at tree lines and plan for easy repairs.

Gates for Animals and Equipment

Farm gates have to be wide enough for trailers and tractors and strong enough that animals don’t push them open. We build and hang wide single and double gates with sturdy hinges and latches, and we can automate driveway entrances so you don’t have to climb out of the truck in the rain. Materials Built for the Long Haul

Wood board fences are traditional and repairable, and pressure-treated posts handle ground contact well. Vinyl ranch rail skips the painting and holds its color. For practical perimeter work, chain link and wire options cover ground efficiently. Compare them on our materials page.

Permits, Utilities and Your Estimate

Even in the country, rules vary by municipality, and some properties sit in HOAs or conservation areas with their own requirements. We check the rules for you and handle the permit when needed. We also submit the PA One Call (811) request so buried utilities are marked before digging, which matters on properties with long electric or water service runs.
